The total number of
COVID-19 cases in India has surged to 21, 797. Out of this, 4, 376 have been
recovered successfully, while 686 failed to defeat corona. When the
circumstances are already at its worst, incidents of the police force and
health workers being attacked raises a big concern in the nation.
Witnessing the current
situation, the government had to take strict action against people violating
social distancing and lockdown norms. After announcing a set of guidelines foremployees and employers working during lockdown 2.0, the government moved the
focus to health workers' safety.
And finally, yesterday (on 22nd April 2020), Prakash Javadekar (Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate and Minister of Information and Broadcasting) came in defense of people working on the forefront to safeguard the nation from the coronavirus pandemic.

As per the Health
Ministry, India is doing great, in terms of recovering from COVID-19 with a
recovery rate of 17.47%.
Major Statements Given at the Conference-
- Acts of violence against health workers to be made
cognisable, non-bailable offenses
- In the case of grievous injuries, the accused can be
sentenced for 6 months to 7 years. The accused will be penalised from Rs.
1 to 5 Lakhs
- If any damage is done to the health workers' vehicle,
the accused will have to pay a compensation amounting to twice the market
value of the damaged property
- Investigation on such cases will be completed within 30
days
- An amendment to be made to Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897,
and the ordinance will be implemented.
- Accused can be penalised from Rs. 50,000 to 2 Lakhs
This announcement was
made to boost the morale of health workers and police staff who have been
putting themselves on risk, working round the clock, and ensuring our safety.
This is indeed a commendable step taken by the Indian government in support of
health workers.
